The Unique and Bizarre of The Venetian Masks

Among the most famous Venetian masks are Bauta. Venetian masks can be used either by men or women. Usually a combination of these masks are as follows: white face mask, black jacket and distinctive headgear.

Among the most bizarre Venetian mask is “The Plague Doctor” mask. This mask is recognized by a long nose like a beak stork. Initially, this is not a mask but it as a protection for the doctor from what is called a terrible outbreak at the time. The disease kills half of the population of Venice during the two epidemics that struck Europe in 1576 and 1630. In the beak mask included herbal remedies, then the doctor touched the lepers and their clothes only with sticks. This is a protection to avoid a spread of infection.

More typical Venetian mask costume is green and white striped Zanni, also known as Brighella.
